The team is working to help Different communities and schools in South Los Angeles. We are looking to make a website containing information about health and a workout plan. Since we are doing it with schools we made the workout plan into a game. We want to make sure that the children that go to these schools are healthy. There are already things being done in the area. There are already different apps and websites pushing out this information. But, most of them cost money and are hard to access. There are also workout plans that are accessible. In schools there are caloric limits so children can stay healthy. In most public schools in South Los Angeles the schools can serve a different amount for different ages. For children in kindergarten through fifth grade during breakfast they can have 350-500 calories. For sixth through 8th they can have 400-550 calories for breakfast. For grades ninth through twelfth they can have 450-600 calories. In lunch the K-5 grades can have 550-650 calories, for grades 6-8 they can have 600-700 calories, and in grades 9-12they can have 750-850 calories. These amounts were issued by the USDA in 2010 in the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act. We would like to pair up with various schools in the community of South Los Angeles to put our solution into affect.
Our team started by thinking of many ideas that we couldn't decide from. Our first idea was to create diets that people could easily use. But after gathering more information we found out that most diets don't even work and that when people have diets they under eat which leads them too overeating and gaining a lot of weight, so that option was ruled out. We then decide to focus our community a little bit more by targeting younger kids in schools in South L.A. We targeted South L.A. because it has lots of fast food restaurants which can lead to lots of people being over wait. After that our second idea was that we would create some type of game that would engage the kids. but the only problem with that was that most young kids didn't have a device that they could play our game on, so we put a pin in that one. after brainstorming we came up with a idea to engage the parents a little bit more in the child's health. while researching we discovered that a child's willingness to stay active depends on the parent because the kids looks up to them as a role model. But that idea didn't seem to have a great effect while thinking about it. So after discussing with our teachers we decided to combine the second and third idea into one. We have the idea to make a electronic board game were the child would go through completing different exercises. We worked on this idea the entire time till we tried to partner up with STAR. At the entire board game there are ten levels not including the final one.
