The Problem
Caloric intake (your consumption of calories) is a big factor in a persons daily life. If a person does not have enough calories on a daily bases then they can be under weight or malnourished. A bigger problem is having to many calories on a day to day bases. This can lead to obesity and bad health. This is a big problem around the world. It can be even worse if it is in a populous and growing community. One neighborhood where this is true is South Los Angles. It is a very populous area and does not have a high income rate. This can lead to many problems like lots of fast food restaurants in the area. Also since people do not have an understanding of how over consumption of food can hurt them this problem could be more wide spread.
The people of South Los Angeles are eating too many calories, and eating too many calories leads to obesity and chronic diseases, like diabetes. Evidence of how bad the problem is in South LA are statistics such as 33% of the children in South LA are overweight and 1 in 7 residents has diabetes. In comparison, 1 in 12 residents of West Los Angeles has diabetes. The reasons the residents of South LA are eating too many calories appear to be things like poor eating habits, a lack of safe places to exercise (so people eat more calories than they burn), a lack of available nutritious food (there are shortages of places to buy fresh fruit and vegetables), and poverty (healthy food is more expensive than junk food).
